Entry Guidelines

Write an essay (in 500-1,000 words) on the following question: In the time period starting from October 1, 2019 to September 1, 2020, what has been the most important contribution you have made as an organisation, individual, project or service towards comprehensively improving the condition of the world? (Remember, you will be evaluated on how best you meet the five KPIs (see side-bar, right), so be sure to keep them in mind while writing the essay.)

Guidance notes:

1) Your contribution to either one or more of the listed SOCIO-ECONOMIC OR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TARGETS could have been as a manufacturer (components, equipment, accessories, spare parts, software, bodybuilding of reefer trucks, etc.), consultant, contractor, project manager, ESCO, testing & commissioning/re-commissioning firm, testing and certification body, architect, FM firm, IT solutions firm for improving building performance, building owner, cold storage owner, logistics company, utility, developer or master developer. This list is not exhaustive; if you do not find your specialised field of activity but know you are contributing either directly or indirectly to the above-mentioned examples, we strongly recommend you apply to be evaluated.

2) Your contributions could have been in the form of innovations (with inherent R&D initiatives), technological and business best practices, technological and business (market) transformations or education-related initiatives that have empowered your human resources or external stakeholders to optimise their performance, leading to solutions related to either one or more of the listed SOCIO-ECONOMIC OR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TARGETS.

3) Broadly speaking, solutions could include better indoor air quality, greater energy efficiency, reliability, safety, cost effectiveness (reduction in first cost and opex without compromising on quality).

4) When it comes to presenting in front of the judges, it should be noted that if a product or service is entered for more than one category, the judges will expect that each presentation will have a specific focus associated with the category in which it is entered. The judges will make an exception in the presence of a specific focus.

5) Please DO NOT present a sales pitch; the judges are not interested.

The contribution ideally is to be in terms of any one or more of the following 18 SOCIO-ECONOMIC OR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TARGETS (many of which are reflected in various regional and international vision documents, which also you are welcome to reference; see side-bar, titled Links to vision statements and codes):

  1. Helping in the fight against COVID-19 – in containing the spread of the virus through immediately implementable building retrofit and/or HVAC-specific disinfection solutions, or initiating design and installation solutions in New Construction with a long-term view to effectively minimising contamination, keeping future possible pandemics in mind
  2. Mitigating climate change (reducing direct and indirect emissions)
  3. Protecting the ozone layer (reducing direct emissions)
  4. Harnessing clean renewable energy for enhancing building performance and process cooling regimes across multiple sectors (healthcare, hospitality, oil & gas, etc.)
  5. Safeguarding soil, air and water
  6. Providing thermal comfort, indoors or outdoors, without compromising on energy efficiency
  7. Providing acoustical comfort
  8. Providing clean indoor air in specialised areas like underground car parks (protecting from chemical contaminants)
  9. Ensuring food safety
  10. Ensuring and supporting the cause of food security
  11. Ensuring vaccine potency
  12. Ensuring fire and life safety
  13. Supporting healthcare facilities, blood banks and other such entities that need specific and mission-critical climate-controlled environments
  14. Protecting and ensuring the wellbeing of data centres, telecom shelters and the like, in terms of proper cooling and dehumidification and, at the same time, ensuring energy-efficient operation
  15. Providing specific ambient conditions with a view to protecting cultural entities (museums and the artworks, within) and to improving the functionality of printing presses and other specialised facilities.
  16. Enhancing the reliability and cost-effectiveness of process cooling while providing safe and comfortable working conditions to those working in the process cooling industry
  17. Giving specific options and choices to government bodies as they explore and implement projects aimed at national, regional and global development
  18. Other (please specify and elaborate on your contribution towards this socio-economic or sustainable development target)

(Note: If you prefer to state your case in the form of bullet points instead of an essay, you may do so, as long as the communication is comprehensive and clear.)
